Just because Dr. Seuss’ birthday is over, does not mean the fun stops now. As the week continues, students in Troy City and Pike County Schools will participate in fun activities each day to encourage the students to read and develop a love for reading.

“Reading is very important for our children,” said Anita Grant, Pike County Elementary School principal. “It’s just one of the things that we do to promote reading in our school and to get the children involved.”

Tuesday, PCES students wore short socks, tie-dye socks, bright socks and sky-high socks, to go along with “Fox in Socks” by Dr. Seuss. The students showed their excitement about reading with the craziness of their socks.

“Reading is the key to success,” said Janet Dempsey, PCES librarian. “If you don’t read, you don’t do math. It’s the basis for academics for the remainder of our lives. Even with technology being what it is, if they can’t read, they can’t excel.”

The students at Troy Elementary School went “All Out for Reading,” by taking their books outside to read and participate in other activities.

“This week, the emphasis is on the enjoyment of reading,” said Teresa Sims, TES principal. “Most importantly, we want children to know that reading is a life-long activity, not something we just do at school. Reading opens so many opportunities for students to read about places they haven’t been, to learn new ideas, to use their imagination and to expand their creativity. And it’s fun.”

Sims, along with the student body, went all out for reading with their wardrobe by wearing camouflage, sporting the outdoor theme.

“We went all out for reading today, just to have a little fun,” Sims said. “We let them wear camo and encouraged them to go outside.”

Students across America have getting fired up about reading, and students in Pike County are no exception.

Today, TES students will be wearing crazy socks. GES, Banks, PCES and PLAS students will have a wacky Wednesday, wearing tacky clothes.

Thursday, TES students will participate in random acts of kindness, PLAS students will wear green like The Grinch, PCES students will wear fishing gear, Banks students will wear crazy socks and GES studetns will wear crazy hats.

Friday, TES students will dress as their favorite book characters, PLAS students will wear red and white, PCES students will wear green, Banks and GES students will wear pajamas and Covenant Christian students will dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters.
