Charles Henderson’s India Blakely scored a game-high 16 points and the Barbour County offense was stifled, scoring just nine points in the second half in the Lady Trojans’ 50-21 victory over the Jaguars Tuesday night.

Blakely was one of three Charles Henderson players who scored in double digits.

Kyra Scott and Maori Davenport each contributed 13 points for the Lady Trojans.

After a back-and-forth start to the game that saw the two teams trade leads early in the first quarter, Charles Henderson settled down, breaking an 8-8 tie and going on a 6-0 run to close the quarter.

Davenport lead the Trojans with six points, six rebounds and one block in the game’s opening eight minutes.

In the second quarter, Charles Henderson’s offense continued to score, going on another 10-0 run.

The Lady Trojans’ defense was just as effective, limiting Barbour County to just four points in the second quarter before going into halftime with a comfortable 26-12 lead.

Going into the third quarter, Charles Henderson head coach Dyneshia Jones stressed to her team the importance of finishing the second half strong.

Last Friday, the two teams met and Charles Henderson nearly squandered a double-digit halftime lead.

“We played them (Barbour County) last Friday and they came back to within nine points,” Jones said. “We needed to box out, rebound and capitalize on their mistakes.”

Tuesday night, the second half played out much differently.

Charles Henderson remained hot offensively and shut down any semblance of a Barbour County comeback as the Lady Trojans outscored the Jaguars 24-9 in the final two quarters.

Although Davenport was held to just two points in the second half, her presence was still felt on the defensive side as she tallied four blocks.

“She (Davenport) is averaging five-plus blocks a night,” Jones said. “It makes a big difference. They (opposing teams) are scared to drive most of the time because of her.”

With Davenport held at bay offensively, Charles Henderson’s Kyra Scott and Tatyana Siler took over scoring duties in the second half.

The Lady Trojans struggled from the free throw line, shooting just 6-of-13, including 3-of-9 from Davenport.

But in the end, the missed free throws proved inconsequential as the Lady Trojans breezed to a 29-point victory.

“I think they (the team) did a great job, both offense and defense,” Jones said. “It was kind of a bad game in the second half last Friday. Compared to Friday, we did a great job.”

Barbour County’s Eloise Grubbs finished with a team-high 10 points.

Breanna McCray led the Jaguars with five rebounds.

Charles Henderson will travel to Dothan Thursday for the Northview basketball tournament.
