When Lorenzo Frazier, Raymond Wheeler, William Davis and James Wright first heard about the District Domino Tournament for the Masters Games of Alabama, they were not interested.

“It took some convincing to get them to participate because the rules were a little stricter than they are used to. I did finally get some volunteers to be my guinea pigs and get involved,” said Jessica Cox of Troy Nutrition Center. “They were glad to help and they dominated the competition.”

Troy Nutrition Center took the city’s four participants to Dothan’s Rosehill Senior Center for the competition.

“All four of our senior men placed in the singles Division in their respective age divisions,” said Cox.

Lorenzo Frazier took first place in Men’s Singles 75-79. Raymond Wheeler earned first place in the Men’s Singles 65-69. William Davis was also a first-place winner. His age category was Men’s Singles 60-64. James Wright won second place in Men’s Singles 70-74.

The players also competed in the Men’s Doubles round where they won additional ribbons. Wheeler and Wright teamed up to take first place 65-69 (playing in the younger of the two’s age division) and Davis and Frazier earned third place 60-64.

Masters Games of Alabama is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active adults ages 50 and older through social, mental and physical activities.

The games were developed in Oxford in 1989 to provide adults ages 50 and older an opportunity to maintain an active lifestyle by participating in a variety of events. While the games provide an Olympic-type atmosphere, the focus is not on competition, but fun and fellowship. Each year there are between 600 and 800 participants from across the state.

This was Troy Nutrition Center’s first year participating in the Masters Games, but it won’t be the last. “Now we are working on getting more of our seniors involved in the Masters Games,” Cox said. “There are other categories to compete in for example, in August those interested will compete in bowling.”

The domino champions will head to Oxford in October to compete in the Masters Games of Alabama.
