The U.S. Department of Transportation approved a Transportation Alternative Project grant that will provide sidewalks along two Brundidge streets.

The City of Brundidge was awarded $430,847 for S.A. Graham Boulevard on the west side of town and Galloway Park on the north side. The city will contribute a 20 percent match amounting to $86,169.

“The plans were submitted to the Alabama Department of Transportation for approval,” said Mayor Jimmy Ramage. “They have 30 days to approve it.”

Once approved, the city will bid out the project and start construction. Ramage said construction should not interrupt traffic.

The council approved a tobacco license application submitted by Family Dollar. “They have to have a state license for tobacco and the ABC Board won’t act on it until it’s acted on by the City of Brundidge,” said Britt Thomas, city manager.

Thomas presented financials for the fiscal year up to May. Brundidge was under budget for the majority of the categories. Expenditures in the power department came in over budget because Thomas authorized overtime for those who were helping to install the new meters.

Brundidge resident Jack Ross wrote a letter to the council requesting that they not add any additional speed bumps. The council heard from Brundidge resident Kenneth Jackson at the July 1 meeting.

Jackson asked the council to add speed bumps to John Street. “It’s for the kids’ safety,” he said. “My kids and others were playing out in the street on Saturday. Then, on Saturday night, a car came speeding up the street and ran into a building. What if that had happened earlier in the day? We need a speed bump on our street for the safety of the kids.”

The council took no action on the matter at this or the last meeting. The issue was not on Tuesday’s agenda. Ramage said the item would not be taken under consideration any time soon. “We’ve got as many speed bumps as we need, right now,” he said. “We need to work on traffic and speeding.”
