A Goshen man has been arrested for stealing a 1995 logging trailer valued at $10,000.

According to Chief Craig Hill with the Alabama Forestry Commission, David Mills, Jr., 36, was a contract logger for Peacock Timber. He was the last known person to use the trailer, but denied knowing where the property was when the company wanted to reclaim it.

“Another Peacock employee spotted it at a service station in the Highland Home area,” Hill said. “Further investigation determined that this guy knew where the trailer was the whole time. He was concealing where it was.”

Hill said he doesn’t believe Mills was still employed with Peacock when the company asked for the trailer to be returned.

Mills was arrested on May 7 and was released from the Pike County Jail on a $5,000 bond. He was charged with first-degree theft – a Class B felony. If convicted, he could serve a jail sentence of two to 20 years and/or a fine of up to $30,000.

Mills’ charges came after a joint-investigation by the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Pike County District Attorney’s Office.
