The Sun Belt Conference announced Wednesday that Texas State will join the league as a full member on July 1, 2013. The school will begin play in the 2013-14 academic year.

Texas State, located in San Marcos, has over 34,000 students and supports 16 varsity athletic programs.

“Texas State is a great addition to the Sun Belt Conference as the Bobcat athletic program is destined for success in the Football Bowl Subdivision,” said Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson in a statement released by the league.  “The Sun Belt Conference’s rise to prominence will continue with Texas State as part of our league.”

The Sun Belt has already added Georgia State and it is expected that UT-Arlington will join in the near future as a non-football memeber.

As the Sun Belt brings in new members, it appears the league will lose a couple as well.

The Miami Herald confirmed that Florida International will join Conference USA in 2013. CBSSports.com reported that North Texas will join FIU in the move leaving the Sun Belt with 10 football playing members and 12 overall members.
