Thad Yancey

Mr. Thad Yancey SR. age 92 passed away on April 30, 2012 at the Troy Health and Rehabilitation Center.  Mr. Yancey was born on April 19, 1920, in Pavo, GA.

Growing up in the depression, he learned at an early age the importance of hard work; he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the European theater during World War II. Following his discharge, he began working with a typewriter sales and service company in Albany, GA. In 1954, he was given his on territory and moved his wife and son to Troy, AL. where he opened Yancey Typewriter Company. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and made many pieces of furniture for his family. He also enjoyed fishing, and going to local yard sales. Even in retirement, he loved to buy and sale.

Mr. Yancey was one of the four men who established the Pike County Gideon Chapter. He loved the Lord and loved sharing God’s word. Through his work with the Gideon’s he was able to do that. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church since moving to Troy in 1954.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy with Reverend David McVay and Dr. Malone Chandler officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery with Dillard Funeral Home of Troy directing.

Visitation will be held at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.

He is survived by his daughter Ruth Yancey, his son and daughter-in-law Thad Yancey, Jr. and Paula, grandchildren Lydia Yancey and Mark Yancey, sister Eola Yancey Pike and her husband Billy.

He was preceded in death by his wife Frances Joins Yancey, his parents George and Vallie Yancey, brothers Roscoe B. Yancey and George Spencer Yancey, sisters Grace Yancey Weatherbee and Beatrice Yancey Sutter.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Pike County Gideon’s and the Wesley-McCartha Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice Advantage, the staff of Troy Health and Rehabilitation C wing who took great care of him during his time there, and a Special thanks to Rita Outlaw of Hospice Advantage for always being there for Mr. Yancey and his Family.
