After only eight days, Troy students collected 889 pounds of aluminum and plastic to recycle as part of Troy’s “Go Green Week.”

“We’ve had the most this year than we’ve ever had, I believe,” said Ashley Smallwood, the city’s special projects coordinator.

Troy Elementary School’s fourth-graders gathered aluminum and fifth-graders collected plastic. Their materials equaled 404 pounds.

Pike Liberal Arts School turned in 370 pounds of products. Fourth-graders were responsible for aluminum and fifth- and sixth-graders took charge of plastic products.

New Life Christian Academy collected 48 pounds of plastic and Covenant Christian School’s third- and seventh-graders brought in 67 pounds of both aluminum and plastic.

“The smaller schools impressed me a lot this year,” Smallwood said. “They have fewer children and still brought in an incredible amount.”

KW Plastics aided the city with the Go Green Week Recycling Competition by weighing the products to determine which classrooms collected the most overall. This is the fifth year the city has sponsored the program.
