There was only one statewide race left undecided after the March primary election, and it was also the only race on the ballot Tuesday in Pike County.

Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh claimed the title of the GOP nominee for president of the Public Service Commission. She triumphed over Chip Brown, a graduate of Troy University.

Officials say 740 total ballots were cast Tuesday in the Pike County Republican primary run-off election. Unofficial results were Cavanaugh- 463 (62%) and Brown- 277 (37%).

Cavanaugh garnered nearly half of the statewide vote in March, but didn’t get the 50 percent, plus one needed to avoid a runoff.

Cavanaugh is now set to face off with currently PSC President Lucy Baxley in November. Baxley is the last remaining Democrat holding statewide office. She defeated Cavanaugh for the job in 2008 by less than one percentage point.

The PCS president leads a utility regulatory board that lacks much of the power it used to wield.

After a pretty bleak turnout of voters during the primary election where local names were on the ballot, it’s no surprise there were even fewer voters to the polls Tuesday.

Statewide, Alabama’s chief election official, Secretary of State Beth Chapman, predicted an extremely light turnout of only 2 to 4 percent.

“Historically, turnout has been very low for runoff elections in presidential primary years,” Chapman said in an e-mail.

Chapman said she felt voter interest would be minimal because there were no statewide races on the Democratic Ballot Tuesday.
