Trojans bats silent; blanked by Auburn, 7-0

Troy’s season continued to spiral downward as the Trojans produced just four singles – one an infield hit by Logan Pierce in the ninth inning – in a 7-0 loss to Auburn on Tuesday.

The Trojans (17-22) have now lost four of their last five and have fallen twice to Auburn this season. The Tigers defeated Troy 7-4 last week.

Troy won its first conference series of the season two weeks ago but is still 6-12 in Sun Belt Conference play and sits last in the league standings.

“I think we were still lacking energy from the weekend,” Pierce said in reference to the dropping two of three to Western Kentucky. “(Auburn) was just better than us tonight.”

The Tigers, who have chosen not to renew the series with Troy for the foreseeable future, imposed their will early on the Trojans with a solo home run off starter Ryan Brady in the first inning.

Troy threatened in the bottom of the frame picking up half of its offensive production with two hits, but squandered the scoring opportunity when Danny Collins grounded into a double play.

Brady would allow four runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings on the mound.

The Trojans bullpen didn’t help to stop the bleeding as Garrett McHenry and Jeremy McGowan combined to walk four batters and surrender four hits in three innings of relief, giving up three more runs.

Pierce, one of few consistent bright spots for this year’s Trojans, was 2-for-4 on the day and is batting .397 on the season.

“We just didn’t get enough offensively from our club tonight,” Bobby Pierce said. “You got to score runs in midweek games and we didn’t do that.”

The Trojans will return to Riddle-Pace on Wednesday at 6p.m. against a subpar Alabama A&M squad that is 8-35 on the season. This will be the second opponent Troy has faced from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Trojans fell to Alabama State earlier this season.
