The Brundidge City Council will hold a public hearing at 4 p.m. today at Brundidge City Hall to allow its citizens input into the city’s’ application to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for funding through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) for improvements to the city’s water system in the amount of $975,000.

The DWSRF is a low interest loan program intended to finance pubic infrastructure improvements in Alabama. The program is funded with a blend of state and federal capitalization funds.

Britt Thomas, Brundidge city manager, said Brundidge is an $18 million municipality and about 75 percent of that amount is invested in its electrical, water and sewer systems.

“The DWSRF is an investment in the city’s infrastructure,” Thomas said. “It will ensure reliable, safe potable drinking water, improve the city’s fire protection, discontinue the expense of physical meter reading through an automate meter reading system and provide a needed control system to aggregate the city’s three wells and four tanks into an electronically controlled environment.”

Thomas said the majority of the loan will be used to install an automated meter reading system. The loan will be repaid out of the city’s existing cash flow and will not necessitate an increase in the city’s water rates. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend the public hearing to ask questions or express concerns.
