Troy University has submitted a bid to host the Alabama High School Athletic Association South Regional Tournament.

The city of Troy pledged $38,000 earlier this week in the event the university was awarded to bid.

“It’s about supporting the kids,” Troy Athletic Director Steve Dennis said. “If we can provide a good environment for these athletes, that’s what we’re going to do.”

The AHSAA will vote on the received bids on April 17.

Troy hosted the tournament for several years ending in 2009. In 2006, four fans were arrested following a fight in the stands during a game between Carver High School and Auburn High School.

“If we are awarded the bid, we will expect everyone to act the way they are supposed to,” Dennis said. “We don’t anticipate any problems if awarded the tournament.”

$23,000 of the funds pledged by the city of Troy is intended to assist with security.

The past three seasons, the tournament has been held at the University of South Alabama.

If awarded, Troy will be required to sign a three-year commitment to host the event.

24 teams from all six AHSAA classifications play in the regional tournament over a five day span in late February. Qualifiers from each level advance to the state finals.
