Goshen’s baseball team came from behind to knock off Highland Home in the final inning 2-1.

A game which began with a pitching clinic would be determined by pitching mistakes that would cost Highland Home two runs. Highland Home starting pitcher John Dunn posted 12 total strikeouts against Goshen while the Eagles starting pitcher Austin Rushing recorded eight strikeouts.

The dominating pitching held the game scoreless all the way through to the seventh inning. In the top of the inning, Chris McCullough gave Highland Home their fifth runner of the day with single hit to left field.

He went on to pick up the teams third stolen base of the game as he took second with Brandon Powell stepping up to the plate. Powell picked up an RBI single as he sent McCullough home with a hit into right field giving Highland Home the lead, 1-0.

With the game quickly closing out, Goshen finally put the tying run on base with Rob Boutwell’s single to right field. With two outs, Seth Lolley struck a single to left field sending Boutwell to third and bringing Grant Hughes to the plate.

Highland Home pitcher John Dunn balked on the first pitch to Hughes that sent the Boutwell in to tie the game at 1-1 and advanced Lolley to second base. With Hughes still at the plate Lolley picked up another stolen base for Goshen as he took third base. Two pitches later, Dunn committed another balk that would send Lolley home and give Goshen the final 2-1 victory.

“It was a great game,” head coach Kinsaul said.

“Both pitchers dominated the whole game, but we were just fortunate to find a way to win at the end. We knew coming into this game that it would be a tough battle; both teams are very strong, but we were just very fortunate to get the win.”

Goshen will play Highland Home in a doubleheader on Friday on the road.

Game time is set for 4p.m.
