The Charles Henderson High School tennis team fell to Dothan High School at home Thursday, 7-2, but earned both a singles and doubles win.

The match opened with singles competition and the Trojans falling in the first three recorded scores before taking their first point of the match thanks to a 10-5 singles win by Robert Lee.

“I could have done better than I did today,” Lee said. “At first I wasn’t really feeling it but I picked up later on and was able to bring in a win. Overall today we didn’t do as well as we could of, we need to work more on our serves and teamwork before the next match.”

Another standout performance from the singles round came from Devantez Jackson, who in the final singles set stayed with his opponent to force a 9-11 round.

Down 1-5 after singles play the Trojans moved into doubles play, but found themselves facing similar struggles and only managed a lone doubles point across three matches.

The Trojans doubles win came courtesy of Patrick Jackson and Devantez Jackson, who managed to stay ahead on a close match to finish 10-8.

“I think we played really good,” Patrick Jackson said. “We played a really good team and we never gave up and it turned out good. Overall I thought the team did a good job today.”

The final doubles set proved another close match, with Lee and Tim Foster combining to make it close and finish 9-11 to close out the day.

“I’m pleased with the team today and thought they did some things well,” Trojans head coach Robert Lewis said. “Dothan is a strong team from a strong tennis town and has some tremendous players with a lot of experience. We hung with them and got a single and a double and we played outside of our class but that’s what you’ve got to do.”

The Trojans will return on March 16, to face Providence Christian, which Lewis sees as an opportunity to improve and prepare for upcoming tournament play.

“The main thing is that some of our players are really improving and that’s what you really look for,” he said. “It’s not terribly surprising but it is gratifying to see happen, the regular season is not so much about winning as getting better as a team and we’ve been doing that.”

The Trojans will start their match against Providence at 3:30p.m. at the Lunsford Tennis Complex at Troy University.
