The City of Troy is applying for an Alabama Department of Environmental Management grant that could make the municipality the pilot program for a new type of recycling collection.

The city council voted to authorize the application at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

The grant funds are made possible through the Solid Wastes and Recyclable Materials Management Act passed by the Alabama Legislature in 2008 where a $1 per ton fee was imposed on all solid wastes disposed of in Alabama landfills. Municipalities looking to begin or improve recycling programs are eligible for the money.

If the city were to receive the grant valued at $292,000, the city would begin a program using 32-gallon recycling cans issued to residents who wanted to participate in the program. Each can would be fitted with a Radio Frequency Identification tag. That way, amounts and types of recyclable materials can be tracked.

The grant would also allow for the purchase of more cardboard collection trailers.

Also at the meeting, the council voted to:

Authorize a grant application for a new playground in Troy.

Award one bid for two crew cab trucks for the Public Works Department to Ken Cox Ford for about $23,000 each.

Award one bid for one crew cab truck for the Public Works Department to Ken Cox Ford for $18,343. Award one bid for a trash loader truck for the Public Works Department to Kenworth in Montgomery for $123,206. Award one bid for a 15-passenger van for the Senior Center for $25,757.

Award one bid for the demolition and removal of two buildings on Elm Street to Booth Enterprises for $9,600.
