‘Jail’ to raise funds

Just how many Pike County citizens will be locked up on “willingness to help the youth of Pike County charges” is uncertain at this time.

However, “Warden” Ovida Walden said the number is expected to be large.

“There are so many citizens who devote time and talent to helping our young people that we expect the ‘Pen in Pike’ to be filled to overflowing on March 30,” she said.  “Summons to appear” will be issued to citizens who are charged with a willingness to help the county’s youth and they will be “Locked Up for Good.”

“They will be sentenced to community confinement in the Pen for Pike with bail,” Walden said. “Bail will be $50. Those who are charged must turn themselves in to the ‘Pen’ on the square in downtown Troy between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on March 30.” The “Locked Up for Good 2012” fundraiser will benefit the Leadership Pike, a program of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.

The bail “donations” will help raise funds for college scholarships for high school seniors in Pike County. All donations are tax deductible. “The scholarships are given annually to four graduating high school seniors, one from each school in Pike County,” Walden said. “The scholarships are awarded to the most qualified applicants based on their ACT/SAT score, their grade point average and a leadership essay on ‘Why being an effective leader is important to me.’”

Walden said that “Locked Up for Good 2012” not only raises money for Leadership Pike’s scholarship program, it recognizes many of the county’s citizens who go the extra mile to help the county’s young people reach their goals and achieve their dreams.

Those who wish to bring charges against a citizen for willingly and knowingly helping our county’s young people may do so at the Pike County Chamber of Commerce Office in downtown Troy or by calling 566-2294.

A summons to appear will be sent to the ones so charged and they will be asked to turn themselves in to the pen on March 30.

“Throughout the event, lunch, entertainment and prizes will be available to show our appreciation to those who participate,” Walden said.

“Locked Up for Good 2012” is sponsored by the 2012 Leadership Pike class, Milky Moo’s, Zaxby’s, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Firehouse Subs and Specialty Wireless, Inc.
