“Splatterbeat!” is a glow-in-the-dark, paint drumming and rainbow laser light experience and it’s happening at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama’s amphitheater tonight.

Rachael Greve, museum director, said “Splatterbeat!” is a movement that is sweeping the nation and the museum staff is excited to bring this unique super sensory, messy fun experience to Pike County.’

Drummers from the Troy University percussion ensemble will splatter UV attractive paint on themselves and anything else around as they drum giant metal trashcans.

“The lids of the trashcans will be filled with glow-in-the-dark paint,” Greve said. “Every time a drummer strikes the lid, the paint will splatter everywhere.

“While the drummers are drumming, a laser show will be going on behind them and it will mimic the beat of the music. It will be a dazzling show of color.”

After the drummer’s “Splatterbeat” concert, the audience will be invited to march to the beat of their own drums.

“We’ll have stations all around the amphitheater,” Greve said. “Each station will have trashcans with paint-filled lids. Those who want to drum will have an opportunity to star in their own ‘Splatterbeat!’ concert.”

“‘Splatterbeat!’ is best described as exploding colors. It’s a unique experience for those who participate and for those who just sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of “Splatterbeat!”

The paint is water-based but Greve said those who plan to drum should wear old clothing, including shoes.

“‘Splatterbeat!’ is very metropolitan,” she said. “It’s a chance for us to step out of our comfort zone and try something cool and cutting edge. Universities all across the country are having ‘Splatterbeat’ events. If attendance is good, then we will offer more events that attract a different demographic. We’ll see how this turns out.”

Tickets for “Splatterbeat!” are $10 and may be purchased at the gate. The color explosion will get underway at 7 p.m. tonight at the museum’s amphitheater.

Glow in the dark concessions including bracelets and necklaces will be on sale.
