The Troy Music Study Club will present the Heart of Dixie Barbershop Chorus in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Troy.

The concert will be the music study club’s Founders Day celebration event.

Dr. William Denison, club president, said the Founders Day Concert is held annually to pay tribute to the founders of the club.

Founders Day honors those who organized music study clubs in an effort to foster the love of music throughout the community and as encouragement and support of those who participate in all forms of music.

“The Troy Music Study Club was founded in 1905 and was federated in 1907,” Denison said. “We are one of the oldest music study clubs in the state. Our club is affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs,” Denison said.

“Each year, we honor our founders with a concert and this year we are especially proud to present the Heart of Dixie Barbershop Chorus and Quartet. They are local and they are an outstanding barbershop quartet. I’m sure that everyone will enjoy them.”

Within the nine-member chorus, a quartet has been formed and both the chorus and the quartet will perform at the Founders Day Concert on Sunday.

Scott Flower, a chorus member, said that barbershop singing actually began in a barbershop.

“When there weren’t many customers in the barbershop, the men who enjoyed singing would gather and sing the four-part harmony that we know as barbershop quartet singing,” he said. “They sing lead, tenor, bass and baritone and usually dress barbershop fashion.”

Flowers said it’s easy to identify barbershop singers because they will wear armbands, white shirts, bowties, straw hat and sometime suspenders.

“Not all quartets wear the entire barbershop attire but enough that you will be able to recognize them as members of a barbershop chorus or quartet,” he said.

The Heart of Dixie Barbershop Chorus will sing songs that are familiar because they are the songs that are traditional barbershop quartet music.

Perry Green, lead singer for the chorus, said the songs will include “Wild Irish Rose,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” “Sweet Adeline” and the “Wifferspoof Song.”

“Precious Lord” will also be on the song list as will “Zip a dee doo dah” and maybe something as “modern” as a Ricky Nelson tune or two.

The Heart of Dixie Barbershop Chorus practices at noon on Wednesdays at the Colley Senior Complex in Troy. All of those who enjoy singing are invited to join the group.

“If you can sing in the shower, you can sing barbershop,” Green said.

Everyone is invited to attend the Troy Music Study Club’s Founders Day Concert on Sunday. It promises to be a “Zip a dee doo dah” day.
