Thousands of high school athletes nationwide are anxiously awaiting the day they can officially make the decision of where they will play football for the next four years of their careers. Likewise, thousands of coaches are checking the power chords on their fax machines in preparation of receiving confirmation that months of travel and visits have paid off.

National Signing Day is tomorrow and Troy head coach Larry Blakeney couldn’t be more ready for Wednesday to roll around.

“It’s an exciting time for players and their families,” Blakeney said. “Our coaching staff has worked hard and I think we’ve got a solid class put together.”

The Trojan coaching staff will be up and running early tomorrow morning as the National Letters of Intent begin to pour in.

“We’ll be sending out scholarship papers and working with the compliance department to get everything right,” Blakeney said of his staff’s day.

Troy has a talented group of players who were eligible to sign during the early period that ended on Jan. 15.

Junior college players and high school athletes who have graduated early are eligible to sign by this date.

The Trojans picked up several key prospects including Hinds Community College quarterback Deon Anthony and First Coast High School defensive back Shaq Beverly.

Anthony is a mobile quarterback who also received interest from Pittsburg, Southern Mississippi and Memphis. The New Iberia, La., native threw for over 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns his sophomore season at Hinds.

While Troy is happy with its early class, some of their biggest earnings could be made tomorrow.

Verbal commitments have been received from players like quarterback Brandon Silvers (Gulf Shores High School), wide receiver Brandon Brooks (First Coast High School) and wide receiver Cody Core (Auburn High School).

Silvers and Brooks are likely to sign while late reports have come out that Core, said by some to be the state’s most underrated recruit, has backed off of his Troy commitment and given Ole Miss the nod.

While Feb. 1 is always the most hyped bay of recruiting, it is not the only day players can sign. Athletes are allowed to send in a National Letter of Intent as late as April 1.

“Most of our guys will sign on Wednesday,” Blakeney said. “Some guys will put it off but for the majority of guys will sign tomorrow.”

Blakeney feels strongly about the class the Trojans have put together coming off a difficult 3-9 season and will feel even better about it after all the cards are counted.

“We’ll feel real good about it if everyone we have committed signs,” he said.

Recruits are allowed to send in their Letters of Intent beginning at 8 a.m. EST.
