Troy seventh-graders have the chance to be mayor for a day.

The 11th annual Mayor for a Day Essay Contest is underway. Students who are interested in trying for their chance to sit in the mayor’s chair should write an essay explaining why they would like to be mayor, what improvements need to be made in Troy and suggestions on how to make those improvements.

“We have received wonderful feedback from the students over the years, and I enjoy being able to look at the city of Troy through their eyes,” said Mayor Jimmy Lunsford.

One 7th-grader from Troy will be chosen to serve as mayor and will have their essay published in The Messenger. They will also receive $100 Visa gift card from Troy Bank & Trust. Six other students will each receive a $50 savings bond from WTBF. One of those six will serve as city clerk for the day and the five others will act as city council members.

The winning students will spend Feb. 14 touring the city and will conduct their own council meeting at 5 p.m. the same day.
