In difficult economic times, the generosity of Pike Countians still shines through.

Kim May, director of the Pike County Salvation Army, said that donations to the 2011 Red Kettle Campaign totaled $25,175.94.

“For the way the economy is, our Red Kettle campaign was a great success,” May said. “The people of Pike County continue to be generous in their giving and it is greatly appreciated. There are many needs in our community, especially among the elderly who are on limited incomes and single parents. We have many people who are having financial difficulties because they are out of work and are having to deal with personal or family illnesses or unforeseen circumstances. When your income is limited and you have unexpected expenses, that really takes a toll on your pocketbook.”

May said Red Kettle donations were down from last year but only slightly.

“Kettle donations were down $482 and that’s not bad with the economy the way it is,” she said. “Because all of our Red Kettle bell ringers were volunteers, we had no expenses to come out of the donations. So, all of the money that we raised will stay here in Pike County to help our friends and neighbors.

“We want to thank all of those who rang bells for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign and for all of those who gave so generously.”

May said the money received from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) was late coming and the Pike County Salvation Army wasn’t able to help as many as she had hoped with money for rent and utilities.

“Most of the money for rent and utilities comes from the EFSP but we did what we could to help, but there were so many requests,” she said. “Money only goes so far.”

The assistance programs of the Pike County Salvation Army are supported by sales in the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Troy.

“We appreciate all donations to the Thrift Store, especially furniture,” May said. “The furniture usually moves real fast so we’re really glad to get it. As long as furniture is involved, we will pick up items for Thrift Store. We also sell a lot of odds-and-ends and collectible items. We have a lot of clothing donated but ask that it be clean and in good condition.”

The New Year brings new opportunities for those who would like to volunteer with worthwhile organizations and the Pike County Salvation Army has several ways to volunteer. “Right now, we really need someone to volunteer to help with the food bank, getting things organized,” May said. “We can also use help in the Thrift Store and with the planning and carrying out of fundraising events, such as our Empty Bowls benefit in February.”
