Revenue commissioner gives grace period for property taxes

Procrastinators are in luck. The Pike County Revenue Commissioner said property owners have through Jan. 3 to pay taxes without a penalty.

“We’ll be here all day Friday and then back on Tuesday,” said Revenue Commissioner Curtis Blair.

Blair relayed there have been only a few lines over the last several days as people came in to pay property taxes. He credits that to his team, and to a new online pay option.

“We don’t see the numbers of customers in house that we used to before the ability to pay online,” Blair said. “It’s really helped our flow at the counter.”

Pike County residents are also able to return a payment by mail.

“It’s all fairly simple for everyone these days,” Blair said.

Although he said the process is ahead of schedule this year, he expects there could be an influx of people visiting his office in the Pike County Courthouse over the next few business days.

If people don’t make it in to pay their taxes by Tuesday evening, a $5 penalty will be issued. Residents must also then pay one percent of the taxes owed for each month they are late.

The Revenue Commissioner’s office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be closed on Monday.

“People should just come on in and get it taken care of,” Blair said.
