The flagman hit by a car Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 29 is recovering at the hospital, according to the Alabama Highway Patrol.

Hobi Hussey, 21, from Elba, was taken by helicopter to Baptist South in Montgomery where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors had to remove Hussey’s spleen and place rods in his legs, said Trooper Greg Eubanks.

“It looks like he is going to pull through,” Eubanks said.

Hussey was working with an Alabama Department of Transportation crew as a flagman about 7 miles west of Troy when he was hit by a woman driving a light-colored Chevrolet (Geo) Prism.

The impact dislodged one of Hussey’s boots, as well as his cell phone and radio.

Signs were in place on the road warning motorists that speeding fines would be doubled when workers were present. Another sign warned of work ahead.

No charges have been filed, Eubanks said. The incident is still under investigation.
