Pike County will join cities, towns and villages throughout the country in celebrating the partnership between the rural and urban communities during the month of November with one special week designated as Farm-City Week.

The Farm-City Week events in Pike County are spearheaded by the Farm-City Committee of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.

The highlight of the activities is the annual Farm-City Banquet, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 10, at Cattleman Park. Tickets are $12.50 each and are available at the Pike County Chamber of Commerce Office in downtown Troy and at the Johnston Mill in Brundidge on Wednesdays.

“The Farm-City Banquet is a time to celebrate the partnership between our farm and city communities and also a time to recognize and honor those in those communities who have made outstanding contributions during the year,” said Kathy Sauer, Chamber president. “We encourage everyone to join us on this special night of recognition. There is not one among us who is not dependent on our producers and those in the marketing chain for our food and fiber.

Sauer said one in 20 workers in the United States plays a role in producing the nation’s food and fiber and getting it to market.

“The average grocery store stocks more than 30,000 different items and that’s amazing,” she said. “America’s farmers and ranchers produce 16 percent of the total world production on just 10 percent of the world’s land. A total of nearly 1.2 billion acres in the United States is devoted to farming, either as cropland, timberland or fish farming.”

Related occupations include farm managers, plant and animal researchers, food scientists, commodity brokers, agricultural journalists, nutritionists, agriculture teachers, crop consultants, bankers, sales people, marketing experts and many others.

“Farm City Week is a time to think about and be thankful for those involved in getting the food from the farm to the table,” Sauer said. “This includes farmers, ranchers, processors, truck drivers, retailers, and others that work to supply our food.”
