A Peanut Butter Festival wouldn’t be the same without a peanut butter recipe contest.

So, for the 20th time in 20 years, the Peanut Butter Festival in Brundidge will feature a Peanut Butter Recipe contest.

The contest is held annually on Peanut Butter Festival day, the last Saturday of October.

The contest was first sponsored by the Pike County Extension Office and then it was passed along to the Brundidge Study Club.

This year’s contest will be at 9 a.m., Oct. 29 at Brundidge Station on North Main Street in downtown Brundidge.

Tammy Powell, club contest coordinator, said the contest is open to youth and adults ages nine and over who live in Pike and other peanut producing counties.

“The rules for the Peanut Butter Recipe Contest are simple,” Powell said. “Each recipe must contain at least one-half cup of peanut butter. You can use any brand of peanut butter and the recipe doesn’t have to be original. It can be one that your grandma used or one you got out of the Sunday newspaper. What matters is how it tastes and looks.”

There are five categories in the Peanut Butter Recipe contest – candy (16 to 20 pieces), cookies (16 to 20 cookies), cakes (one-half of whole cake), pie and miscellaneous.

Each category will have three divisions, youth (ages 9-18) adults and professional.

Powell said that the contest is popular with 4-H’ers because it will count as one of their six activities to be asked to go to 4-H camp next summer.

“Each entry must have a copy of the complete recipe with it, typed or neatly written,”

Powell said. “You must also have the category of the recipe identified on the top right hand corner of the recipe.”

Each recipe entry should be submitted for judging on a disposable dish or container, which will not be returned.

On the back of the recipe card, each contestant must have his or her name, mailing address and telephone number. Those who are competing in the youth category must list their school, grade, age and homeroom teacher’s name.

“Contestants should take their dish and recipe card to the Peanut Butter Festival Recipe site no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29,” Powell said. “Brundidge Station is located on North Main Street, just across from the post office.”

All dishes will be submitted to a panel of judges. Judging will be based on taste, appearance and uniqueness. Judging should be completed by 11 a.m. Winners will be announced from the Peanut Butter Festival stage around noon.

“Samples of the recipes will be sold on the Peanut Butter Festival grounds at the Brundidge City Hall,” Powell said.
