A lift to a gas station led to a robbery at knifepoint and the arrest of a Troy man.

Jermaine Antoine Adams, 26, of Troy, was charged Friday with first-degree robbery. He was being held in the Pike County Jail on $30,000 bond.

Adams is charged with robbing a 19-year-old man in an incident that took place Wednesday night. It began at the Continental Cinema 5 parking lot shortly before 9 p.m.

“(Adams) walked up to this guy’s car and knocked on the passenger side window,” said Sgt. Benny Scarbrough, public information officer for Troy Police. “(Adams) asked him if he could have a ride to the BP station.”

Once at the gas station, “the suspect asked for money and when the victim said he didn’t have any, the suspect pulled out a knife and pointed it at him,” Scarbrough said.

Adams then took the small amount of money offered and walked away, north towards the movie theater, Scarbrough said.

“We arrested him Friday in the Sunset Mountain Moble Home Park, which is right near the theater,” Scarbrough said.

No one was injured in the incident.

However, Scarbrough said police continue to urge residents to be aware of their surroundings at all times and to be cautious of people who approach them seeking help or money.

“You just need to be alert and look and see what’s going on around you,” Scarbrough said. “I guarantee you, if a person is in genuine need you’re going to know it by the way they carry themselves or their circumstances.”

The case remains under investigation by the Troy Police Department.
