A 20-year-old Troy man apparently committed suicide in a gazebo area of a local apartment complex overnight Tuesday.

Police Chief Jimmy Ennis said the victim was discovered shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday on the steps of a gazebo area at Trojan Crossing in the 400 block of South Brundidge Street.

“Someone was carrying garbage out to the garbage bin and discovered the body,” Ennis said.

Police and Pike County Coroner Jerry Williams and Assistant Coroner Sandy Nasca all responded to the scene.

“It appears he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Ennis said. “There was no evidence of foul play.”

And, Ennis said there has been no determination on the time of death.

Police declined to release any personal details about the individual out of respect to his family. They did say he was not a student at Troy University or a resident of the apartment complex.

Sgt. Benny Scarbrough, who handles public relations for the police department, said the officers expressed condolecenses to the family of the victim.

“Anytime you have to deal with this, it’s a difficult situation,” he said.
