Walter H. Garrett

Walter H. Garrett, 84, of Columbus, GA died Friday, September 30, 2011 at Morningside Assisted Living. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Roy White officiating. A private interment was held at Parkhill Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Gullatte, Ben Wesley, Robert Garrett, Jr., Gilbert Garrett, John Henderson, Wayne Harris, and Josh Harris. The family received friends Sunday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mr. Garrett was born December 1, 1926 in Pike Co., AL son of the late Curtis and Bessie Long Garrett. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He later worked at Martin Food Service. He was also a member of Edgewood United Methodist Church and attended Calvary Freewill Baptist Church. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Buford Garrett, Arlie Frank Garrett, Ruby Ingram, and Mary Gullatte.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Mavis Barron Garrett of Columbus, GA; sisters, Susie Elmore of Phenix City, AL, Jeannette Wesley of Banks, AL and Ruth Henderson (Billy) of Troy, AL; brothers, Robert Garrett (Ruth) of Banks, AL and Grover Garrett (Mary) of Troy, AL; brother-in-law, Jack Gullatte (Ruth) of Phenix City, AL; several nieces and nephews; and great friends, Curtis and Connie Mock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Edgewood United Methodist Church 3969 Edgewood Circle Columbus, GA 31907.
