The Twilighter Community and Social Service Club of Troy will host the 9/11 Heroes 5K Run in conjunction with more than 30 other runs being held from New York to San Diego and places in between.

Conleigh Gilmore, Twilighter president, said the Twilighter Club is a group of high school girls who are strongly interested in making a positive impact on their community.

“The 9/11 Heroes 5K Run is our main event for the year,” Gilmore said. “Heroes runs are events of the Travis Manion Foundation and are held all across the United States on September 11. Troy will be the only city in Alabama to host the Heroes 5K Run that will be held at the Troy Sports Complex at 6 p.m. on Sept. 11.”

Gilmore said the Heroes Run will benefit the Travis Manion Foundation and also firefighters, police and first responders in Troy.

The Travis Manion Foundation is committed to “honoring the fallen by challenging the living and provides assistance to survivors of fallen heroes and to disabled veterans.

Gilmore said the Travis Manion Foundation was created after the death of 1st Lt. Travis Manion, USMC. The foundation is committed to keeping alive the spirit of service and love of country exemplified by all those who have given their lives to protect America.

“The Twilighters believe strongly in our community and support our country,” Gilmore said. “The Travis Manion Foundation has opened a door for us to show our support of the Foundation and our community.

“We are contacting members of our community, individuals and businesses, and asking them to consider supporting our community and our country with contributions. We are also encouraging runners to participate in the 9/11 Heroes 5K Run here in Troy.”

The 2011 Heroes Runs are expected to bring out 25,000 runners and 100,000 spectators to remember the tremendous sacrifice of so many Americans, Gilmore said.
