Angels to play for championship

GENEVA – When the Troy Angels scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning, little did they know it would be the only run they would see in their defensive battle against Geneva on Wednesday.

“We only had two hits on the night, Kelsey Gibson and Holly Hughes,” said coach Larry Sanders. Those hits, combined with Geneva’s errors, were enought to mete out a 1-0 victory and send Troy to tonight’s district championship against Enterprise.

“Our girls played really good defense,” Sanders said of the win. “Nelsey Leverette pitched all five innings and she only gave up three walks.”

The Angels, 3-0, face Enteprise at 6 p.m. today. If Enterprise wins, the if necessary game will immediately follow.

On Tuesday, a five-run third inning sealed the win for the Troy Angels as they defeated Enterprise 10-6 in the Dixie Softball district tournament on Tuesday.

“We hit the ball really well,” said head coach Larry Sanders. “We had three balls hit over the right-fielder’s head, which really busted the game open.”

Troy was leading 4-3 after the second inning when the bats came alive, he said. Five runs later, the Angels had a 9-3 lead, which they held through the fifth inning.

“Bailey Rushing pitched for us and she went all five innings,” Sanders said. “She had five strikeouts.”

Kelsey Gibson and Gracie Scarbrough both had doubles, with Gibson earning four RBISs. Syndey Armstrong had two RBIs.

Also earning hits on the night were Rushing, Molly Kate Sanders, Nelsey Leverette, Hannah Calhoun, Brooke Bennett and Tucker Earles. Sabra Daniels, Holly Hughes and Armstrong all earned walks.
