Fallen branch causes power outages

A tree branch buckled under the weight of its own leaves Friday evening, falling on a power line. That, in turn, led to power outages at residences and businesses along South Brundidge Street.

Lonnie Burnett, Troy resident, said she heard the limb break just outside her home on Banks Street.

“I had just walked home from the store, came up in the yard and I heard something break,” Burnett said. “I looked up at the tree and saw where the branch had fallen on the power line. Then, it started sparking.”

Burnett said as she was calling local authorities, she heard a loud “boom” and then the lines fell.

“I heard a loud pop three times and could smell the tree branch burning,” Burnett said.

With the Fourth of July weekend ahead of her, Burnett said she had a front row seat to an early celebration.
