After winning their sub-district tournament, the Brundidge Belles have some bragging rights.

“The trophy is right there in City Hall, with the girls’ picture,” said coach Cary Maulden.

The Brundidge Belles defeated Enterprise 14-9 and 11-5 in the best-of-three tournament.

“I’m very pleased with them,” Maulden said. “For a lot of them, this (tournament play) is new to them.”

The Brundidge team, the first softball team fielded in Brundidge in several years, actually played in the Troy league during the regular season. They were 4-4.

However, they are representing their hometown in post-season play. “There’s probably only four girls who have actually played in tournament play before,” Maulden said. “I’m really proud of how all of them have played and really proud of how they have improved.”

The Brundidge team actually fell behind Enterprise in the first game, trailing 6-0 in the fourth inning when the momentum shifted. “We just came out and scored nine runs to go ahead in that inning,” Maulden said. “Everybody contributed. We went through all nine batters and everybody did their part.”

Brundidge scored two more runs in the fifth inning and three in the six, but Enterprise was able to score only three more runs.

“We came out in the second game like we had finished the first,” Maulden said.

Brundidge scored seven runs in the first inning, giving the team a jump in momentum. They followed with three more runs in the second and one run in the fourth.

Kelli Grant, Keri Taylor and Kerianna Maulden pitched in the first game. Grant and Taylor pitched in the second.

Other members of the team include Cortney Buzzan, Kathryn Youngblood, Laken Maulden, Shayunta Frazier, Tori Wentland, Montana Brown, Paige Riley, Breann Sewell and Paynton Linzey. Coaches are Maulden, Lamar Riley and Greg Brown.

The Brundidge Belles head to the District 6 tournament, which takes place beginning Friday in Geneva. The state tournament will be held in Troy, and Troy received an automatic bid into the tournament as host team.
