Nell Whittle

Nell Whittle (nee Clark), 89, died peacefully on June 16, 2011, at her home in Moorpark, CA, of natural causes. Her son Howard (“Chip”) and daughter-in-law, Shari, cared for her in her last years and were with her at her death. Nell has joined her husband of 70 years, Albert, who died on March 31, 2011. Nell was born in Batesburg, SC, on December 24, 1921 to Neal B. Clark and Virgie Hall Clark and was one of nine brothers and sisters. Nell’s life with Albert took her on many journeys throughout Europe, Germany, the Far East Asia Region, and Japan, during Albert’s Air Force career. Nell had an extensive background in Interior Design and Fashion. During her 30-year career in real estate she held real estate licenses in Ohio, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. She was Broker and President of Whittle Realty of Alabama, Inc., and was a faculty member of the American Real Estate Institute. Nell was active in USAF officers’ wives clubs and numerous civic organizations. In Troy, Alabama she was Local President and Chairwoman for the Pike County American Cancer Society, Drive Chairwoman for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Parliamentarian and President of the American Legion Auxiliary and chairwoman of its Americanism Committee, President of United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist Church , First Vice President and President of Troy Woman’s Club, President of Troy University’s Faculty Wives Club, President of the Mental Health Association of Pike County, President of the Troy Inter-Club Council, Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Aide-de-Camp in the Alabama State Militia, Activities Chairwoman of the Alpha Gamma Delta Alumnae Chapter, and member of the Nineteenth Century Club. One of her proudest accomplishments was her involvement in the creation of the Bicentennial Park in Troy, where she was a member of the Bicentennial Steering Committee, the Horizon Chairwoman, and Advisory Committee Chairwoman. Additionally, in 1974, Nell’s biography was listed in the book, “Personalities of the South.” Nell was preceded in death by her father and mother; her husband, Albert; her oldest son, Robert; and her brothers and sisters: Mary, Neal, Mildred, Frank, Alvin, Evelyn, Patsy, and Joyce. She is survived by her sons, Alan (Linda) and Howard (Shari); granddaughters, Zezette Cargile (John) and Taylor Whittle; grandson, Jason (Katerina); great-grandchildren, Cullen and Gwen Cargile, and Phineas, Janet, and Henry Whittle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Nell was an amazing woman, a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a consummate businesswoman. She strongly supported equality and helping the underprivileged. Of all her attributes, her strongest was her love for her friends and family. God bless this wonderful woman as she sits with her husband Albert and son Robert. Funeral arrangements will be made by Rose Family Funeral Home in Simi Valley, CA, www.simivalleymortuary.com. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Rose Family Funeral Home chapel. Funeral services for both Nell and Albert will be held at 10:00 am on August 13, 2011 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta, GA.
