Three local ceremonies will take place Monday to commemorate Memorial Day.

VFW Post 7055 in Brundidge will conduct two Memorial Day services on Monday.

The early service will be at 9 a.m. at the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library in Brundidge.

A memorial wreath will be placed at the Veterans Memorial and prayers will be lifted.

At 11 a.m., a Memorial Day service will be held at Elam Baptist Church at Elamville.

Neil Thrasher, VFW Post 7055 second vice commander, said the Elam service will be a typical Memorial Day service with several readings, including “A Soldier Died Today.”

“We’ll also have rifle volleys and the playing of ‘Taps,’” Thrasher said. “Lenny Trawick will provide special music that will include, ‘An Ordinary Man,’ the song that he wrote for his dad and now dedicates to all veterans.”

Thrasher said new flags have been placed around the Veterans Memorial at Elam Cemetery and smaller flags in the cemetery.

“There are 60 veterans going back to the Civil War that are buried at Elam Cemetery,” he said. “We always honor and remember them.”

A tent will be in place at the memorial site to make it comfortable for those who come. Chairs will be provided.

Everyone is invited to stay for lunch in the fellowship hall following the service.

The American Legion Post 70 in Troy will conduct a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. on Monday at Bicentennial Park in Troy.

Post Commander Bob McLendon said Memorial Day is a special day held to remember those who died in service to their country.

“Veterans Day in November honors all veterans but Memorial Day is set to remember those who have made the supreme sacrifice,” McLendon said. “Memorial Day is a much more solemn occasion.”
