“In the 2012 elections, we will focus on the local races,” Armistead said. “We will focus on doubling the number of Republicans in the probate judge and circuit clerk offices.”

Presently there are 23 Republican probate judges and 18 circuit clerks.

Armistead said the Republican Party will provide assistance to local candidates who were appointed to office in an effort to hold those offices.

Thom Haigh, chairman of the Pike County Republican Party, said the Republican Party would support county races including those for county commission.

The Republican Party’s theme for the 2012 elections will be “Foundation for Our Future” and will focus on local races.

Armistead said a bill was passed in the Legislature that will set the 2012 state primary elections in March rather than June.

In the presidential race, Armistead said there are several players but one candidate who could “catch fire” is Herman Cain.

“He will be interesting to watch,” he said.
