American Legion Post 70 in Troy will conduct a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. on Monday at Bicentennial Park in Troy.

Post Commander Bob McLendon said Memorial Day is a special day held to remember those who died in service to their country.

“Veterans Day in November honors all veterans but Memorial Day is set to remember those who have made the supreme sacrifice,” McLendon said.  “Memorial Day is a much more solemn occasion.”

McLendon said the Memorial Day Service is an opportunity for communities to pause and remember those who gave their lives for the liberties and freedoms that all American enjoy today.

“Those who gave their lives for their country were people just like us,” McLendon said. “They were fathers, mothers, sons and daughter who put their lives on hold to serve. They had hopes and dreams that were never realized. We should all remember their sacrifices. It’s easy to go along without thinking about them and their sacrifices. But it’s up to us to keep their memories alive.”

A special part of the Memorial Day Service will be the reading of the names of the men and women from Pike County who died in combat or died from combat wounds.

“These men and women are the reason for Memorial Day and we want to call the name of each and every one of them to honor their service and their sacrifice,” McLendon said.

The Charles Henderson High School JROTC will present the colors at the 2011 Memorial Day Service at Bicentennial Park.

Marine Sgt. Clint Baker will be the guest speaker for the service. Remarks will be made by Randy Ross, Pike County Veterans Affairs Officer, and Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford.

The Rev. Danny Arnold, pastor of Park Memorial United Methodist Church, will give the invocation. Special music will be by Phil Kelly. Recognition will be give to the Gold Star Mothers.

Post 70 Auxiliary will add several names to the Memorial Wall and lay the Memorial Wreath at the monument.
