The Pike County Board of Education approved the end of year personnel recommendations at its Monday meeting.

Pike County Superintendent of Education Dr. Mark Bazzell said that, with a projected ending fund balance of $2 million for 2012, he believes the board is doing what it needs to do.

“We do our best to predict sales tax but right now we are showing no growth,” Bazzell said. “But, the FY12 budget will save jobs. We’ll lose a few people but it’s not as bad as it could be and it’s not as bad as other systems.”

Bazzell said he feels good about the staff configurations and there is the possibility that the reserves could be increased to $2.3 depending on how capital projects money may be carried over to the general fund.

Bazzell said it is his goal to stay around $2 million in reserves.

“I don’t want us to get into a situation where we have to go the bank and borrow money,” he told the board.

Bazzell also presented an additional way to generate revenue through the First National Bank Spirit program. When a participating customer swipes his or her debit account, a percentage of the fee charged goes to the school system, Bazzell said.

“It’s not a lot of money but it will help offset the cost of advertising that we do to promote our schools,” he said. “It’s another way to generate revenue. I recommend that we do that.”

Bazzell said he had some concerns about the proposed faculty and staff dress code.

“There are a couple of things related to gender that could create liability for us related,” he said. “We need to get some legal advice and tie up the loose ends.”

The board offered congratulations to the Goshen Lady Eagles Softball Team for representing GHS and the Pike County School System so well in the state tournament.

In new business, the board:

* Approved the request for Wanda Corley and Lee Scott to attend the CLAS Summer Conference in Montgomery June 19-22. Expenses will be paid from Title I professional development.

* Approved the request for Susan Renfroe and Beth Meilton to attend the AETC Conference in Birmingham June 14-17. Expenses will be paid from Title I professional development.

* Approved the request for Donnella Carter, Elizabeth Grubbs, Mike Hall, Christine Wheeler and Shantell Rouse to attend the MEGA Conference in Mobile during the week of July 18-22. All expenses will be paid by Federal funds.

In personnel action, the board:

* Approved the request for the voluntary transfer of Sylvia Green from Child Nutrition floater to Child Nutrition worker at Pike County High School.

*Approved the request to employ Tammy Bouldin for a full time bus driver position.

* Accepted the resignation from Jon Cooper, teacher at Pike County High School.

* Approved the request for catastrophic leave for Stephanie Tucker.

* Accepted resignation fro Robin Brownson, second grade teacher at Goshen Elementary School.

* Employed Richard Anderson as physical education teacher at Pike County High School.
