Signup for the 2011 Summer Reading Program at the Troy Public Library is underway for youth and young adults and early registration is recommended.

Teresa Colvin, children and young adults librarian, said a fantastic summer program has been planned for both age groups, with the youth program set for June 6 through July 21 and the young adults program June 9 through July 21.

“The youth program for this summer is titled ‘One World, Many Stories,’” Colvin said. “The program for four- and five-year-olds is ‘Color My World’ and children will be introduced to the delights of creativity through story time and art making activities.

“The program for the 6- to 11-year-olds is ‘Around the World in Eighty Days.’ The children will receive a personal passport and ‘travel’ the world learning about many countries and cultures. They will also learn about exotic animals and where they live, make crafts and discover the ancient art of shadow puppet theater.”

Top readers prizes will be awarded according to the number of books read.

“Four- and 5-year-olds may be read to and the 6- through 11-year-olds must read reading level appropriate books themselves,” Colvin said. “First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to the 4- and 5-year-olds and first and second place prizes to the 6- through 11-year-olds.”

The summer program for young adults, ages 12 through 18, is titled “Novel Destinations.”

“We’ll take a look at ‘Aviation Up Close’ by taking a trip to the Troy Airport,” Colvin said. “We’ll have a lot of fun with games and trivia challenges and create Chinese kites and other multicultural crafts.”

The Murder Mystery Lock-In is a highly anticipated event of the young adult Summer Reading Program at Troy Public Library.

“The Murder Mystery Lock-In is always a lot of fun and very well attended,” Colvin said. “It’s limited to 50 ‘detectives’ who work to solve the mystery, which this year will be ‘The Pharaoh’s Curse.’ The detectives will investigate the crime scene and carefully examine the evidence in order to solve the crime.”

Young adult top readers are also recognized as an incentive of the summer reading program.

“The young adults must read level appropriate books, listing titles once and page numbers. Reading logs are due by July 12. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place,” Colvin said. “A special outing will be announced for the top readers.”
