The Troy Kiwanis Club is taking a different spin when it comes to fundraising this year.

And its members are hoping for a successful turnout Saturday at the first “Best in Alabama” Car Show.

“It’s a new venture in fundraising for the Kiwanis Club,” said Thomas Catrett, Troy Kiwanis member. “From a fundraising aspect we have a yard sale every year and figured we’d give this car show a shot.”

The car show, which will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., won’t just be limited to cars, however.

Both classic and new model cars, trucks and motorcycles will be welcomed at the open car show, which will accept entries up until 11 a.m. Saturday.

“We have everything from a 1901 Oldsmobile to a brand new Mustang to trucks and motorcycles signed up right now,” Catrett said. “We’ve got 111 years worth of vehicles.”

The cost of entering a vehicle is $15, and registration will be help from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Ken Cox Ford, where the show will take place. There will be first, second and third place prizes given in each of the categories at 2 p.m.

The general public is encouraged to attend, as well, and the event is free. There will be concessions and door prizes at the event.

Catrett said all the proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Troy Kiwanis Club’s various service project.

“The Kiwanis slogan is ‘Serving the children of the world,’” Catrett said. ‘Everything we do is for children’s charities.”

On a local level, the Troy Kiwanis Club does the Reading is Fundamental program each year with Headstart.

“This is one of the things we do that’s been hit hard by government funding,” Catrett said. “We take money and buy books, and the kids get to pick out which book we want to read to them. They get to keep it, and for a lot of these kids, this is the only book they have.”

Catrett said the club also gives out a teacher’s appreciation award each year, where one teacher in Pike County is recognized and given a Wal-Mart gift card to help with supplies.

The funds from the car show will go toward these projects and also an international effort to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. “We’re going to be a small part of the effort to raise $110 million,” said Troy Kiwanis Club President Caleb Dawson.

“We’d love for everyone to come by,” Catrett said.
