‘Cocktails’ event benefits a cure

If you’re searching for something fun to do this Friday night and would like to support a good cause, then you might consider heading on over to Troy University’s Stadium Club.

“Cocktails for a Cure,” is the name of a Relay for Life fundraiser, which Sharla Davenport, Relay for Life Board member, says will be a fun night for a worthwhile cause.

“We’re calling it ‘Cocktails for a Cure,’ and our slogan is, ‘where every hour is a happy hour,’” Davenport said.

Tickets are on sale for $50 a piece, which, according to Davenport, is extremely reasonable once you realize what’s included.

“People should understand that the ticket includes your food, your beverages with or without alcohol, and entertainment provided by Flatcreek Band,” Davenport said. “We’re going to have silent auction packages and door prizes.”

Davenport said the tickets are an all-inclusive package, unless you would like to bid on one of the silent auction packages.

The variety of silent auction packages available for bids include: the “all about me” package, which includes a full hour massage, a manicure and pedicure, a spray tan, as well as a night stay at the Courtyard; a hunting package; a golfing package; and an automotive package, which includes a tire rotation, oil change, a gas card and a free carwash.

Davenport said that there will be some “mixing and mingling” to raise a cure and that is something she hopes everyone will support.

“Cocktails for a Cure” starts Friday from 7 p.m. – until, at the Trojan Stadium Club, and casual attire is acceptable.

“This is a celebration of life and I don’t plan on turning anyone away at the door,” Davenport said. “It’s a cocktail party, so come dressed appropriately.”

Supporting the cause is something that Davenport said is close to her heart.

“My daughter, when she was in second grade, was diagnosed with cancer,” Davenport said. “The cancer was spreading into her abdomen and she had to undergo five rounds of chemotherapy and we spent countless weeks and months at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.”

Davenport said that if it wasn’t for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, her daughter might not have had the chance at survival that she did.

“If it wasn’t for these organizations, I hate to think what could’ve happened,” Davenport said. “That’s my personal motivation.”

Davenport said that, because of corporate sponsorship, people who would like to “go in together” in purchasing tickets could purchase a booklet of 10 tickets for $400, which would mean a $10 break on each ticket.

Booklets have to be purchased prior to the event and can not be purchased at the door.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the door, or if you want to purchase tickets early you can contact Sharla Davenport at (334) 566-9907.
