If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to save a life, then you might want to make your way over to the Charles Henderson Child Health Center (CHCHC) on Saturday, April 9.

Free CPR and first aid training will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon to individuals interested in learning how they can be of better service in case of an emergency.

The Troy Kiwanis Club, the Troy Fire Department and the CHCHC will sponsor the free training.

Caleb Dawson, president of the Troy Kiwanis Club, said the training is being offered in hopes of serving the surrounding community better.

“Our mission, in the Troy Kiwanis Club, is to serve the children of the world,” Dawson said. “We realized there were no resources in Pike County right now to educate parents about first aid and CPR, in case their children were involved in an emergency.”

Dawson said the free class is being offered to any one, but that it would greatly benefit parents and grandparents.

“The training will teach you how to do CPR and basic first aid for infants, children and adults,” Dawson said.

Dawson said this is the first CPR and first aid training that has been sponsored by the Troy Kiwanis Club along the Troy Fire Department.

“One of the reasons for the training is that several people in the club have babies and other young children at home,” Dawson said. “We realized that none of us knew CPR, so we recognized that there was a need in the community for this.”

Dawson said that the training is crucial to one’s understanding of just how different the CPR techniques are for infants as opposed to when they are applied to adults — for example, the chest compressions are different in that for infants you use fingers instead of the palm of your hand.

“You need to know the rules, because it could save somebody’s life,” Dawson said. “We’re going to have child care, so parents can come and bring their children. Children will be supervised and will be able to play while their parents are learning CPR.”

Dawson said that Spanish translation is also available during the CPR and first aid training course.
