Uncertainty surrounds the resignation of Robert Johnson from his positions as athletic director, head football coach and math instructor at Pike County High School.

Johnson submitted his resignation on Wednesday, March 16, to accept the head coaching position at Tuscaloosa Academy.

However, the Pike County Board of Education voted Monday night not to accept Johnson’s resignation. On the heels of that vote, the board immediately terminated Johnson’s positions as athletic director and head football coach but not his position as math instructor.

“What all of this means is that Robert Johnson is expected to be teaching math at Pike County High School until the end of the school year,” Bazzell said. “If he does not fulfill his teaching contract, we will write the State Superintendent of Education making them aware that Robert Johnson has not met his contractual obligations under Alabama law. What happens then will be up to the state superintendent.”

Johnson has not been at Pike County High School since Wednesday, March 16.

Bazzell said he did not know if Johnson was at work at Tuscaloosa Academy.

However, Johnson told a Messenger reporter he planned to begin work at Tuscaloosa Academy as soon as possible.

“He will not be paid here if he’s not working ,” Bazzell said and added that the teaching situation is uncertain at this point.

“The ball is in Robert Johnson’s court,” he said. “He gave us only two day’s notice and that left us in a tight.

“If he doesn’t fulfill his contract, then we’ll begin looking for a certified math instructor.”

Bazzell said because it is late in the school year, the board may have difficulty finding a certified math teacher.

“Then, we’ll be looking at securing a long-term substitute,” he said.

John Cooper, PCHS assistant football coach, was named the interim head coach.
