When the Brundidge All-Stars and the Pike County Law Enforcement Sharpshooters tip off Sunday afternoon, it’s bound to be a fight to the finish.

Although the fundraiser is billed as an “Old-Timers” basketball game, no one has told that to the players so they are expected to hit the court at the Pike County High School gym with the same enthusiasm as when they were wearing silk shorts and a three-point shot was a thing of the future.

“This is going to be an exciting game between the Brundidge All-Stars and the Law Enforcement Sharpshooters,” said Isabell Boyd, an organizer of the fundraiser. “Years ago, we had a game like this and raised a good bit of money for the cause at that time. We believe that there will be a lot of interest in this game and we invite everybody to come out and enjoy the fun and, at the same time, help finish paying off the air conditioning project for the gym at Pike County Elementary School.”

Boyd said the PCES gym was built in 1963 so, for more than 40 years, the students braved the heat during physical education classes and parents and the community sweltered through many programs “in the gym.”

“We really needed air conditioning for the gym and it was a long time coming,” Boyd said. “But Eva Rogers, Diane Smith and I got together and decided that it was time to do what needed to be done. The support from the school and the community has been very good but we need to get this project paid off and, hopefully, this Old-Timers basketball game will do it.”

The game between the All-Stars and the Sharpshooters will tip at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Pike County High School gym. Admission is $3. Donations are also appreciated.
