Carolyn Whitehurst Townsend

Mrs. Carolyn Whitehurst Townsend died in Toccoa, Georgia on January 18, 2011. She was born January 12, 1922 in Troy, Alabama.

Carolyn is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Marty and Sue Townsend of Chatom, AL and Clay and Pam Townsend of Toccoa, GA; four granddaughters, two great-grandsons, sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ervin Lott.

She was preceded in death by husband, Samuel Francis Townsend, her parents, Rufus Noah and Carrie Lois Whitehurst; brother, Carl Whitehurst, sisters, Dorothy Thompson and Vivian Morgan.

Carolyn graduated as valedictorian from Pike County High School, attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated from Troy State Teachers College with high honors. She taught English at the high school and junior high school level for many years, both in Alabama and in Crestview, Florida where she resided for 45 years. While in Crestview she served two terms as president of the Woman’s Club and served as secretary for the Okaloosa Retired Teachers’ Association.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 12 at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Spring Hill, Alabama.
