Lady Pats: Ribbons remind us

Published 8:47 pm Monday, February 28, 2011

The locker room of the Pike Liberal Arts Lady Patriots was quiet in a reverent kind of way Monday afternoon as the team prepared to take the field in the opening game of the 2011 softball season.

The Lady Patriots took turns tying bright green ribbons in each other’s hair – in ponytails and braids. They talked softly as they remembered two schoolmates who lost their lives in a vehicle crash near the school on Dec. 12, 2010.

The Lady Patriots have dedicated the 2011 softball season in memory of Lexie Pierce and Brooke Ledford and will wear green ribbons in memory of their friends throughout the season.

“Lexie was a member of the volleyball team and most members of the softball team played with her,” said Mindy Avant, softball coach. “Both Lexie and Brooke were well liked and have been greatly missed. The spring sports at Pike Lib are dedicating their seasons to the girls.”

Bright green ribbons were chosen because bright green was the favorite color of both Lexie and Brooke.

“We’re wearing green ribbons with Lexie and Brooke’s initials on them as a reminder that Lexie and Brooke are watching us and cheering us on,” said Merla Jo Laviner. “They will always be with us.”

J.J. Jones said Lexie and Brooke were always happy and fun to be around.

“They made everything more fun,” she said.

Avant said she has challenged the Lady Patriots softball team to play with the same attitude with which Lexie and Brook lived their lives.

“They were always smiling and had a can-do attitude,” she said.

“Even if we get behind in a game, I want the team to play with the same positive attitude that Lexie and Brooke had and never give up.”

The Lady Patriots said the green ribbons will be constant reminders that they are playing for more than wins this year.

“We’re playing for Lexie and Brooke and we know that they will be cheering us on in every game.”
