Police ID suspect in church burglaries

Troy Police are searching for the man they believe burglarized two churches on Dec. 21, 2010.

In a statement released late Wednesday, Sgt. Benny Scarbrough said the Department of Forensic Sciences on Friday identified a suspect in the burglaries of First Baptist Church on College Street and St. Martin Catholic Church on Highway 87.

The identification was based on forensic evidence found at the scene.

“DFS has identified the perpetrator as 34-year-old Willie Winslow Shy,” Scarbrough said in teh tatement. Shy is identified as an African-American male, standing 6-feet, 1-inch tall and weighing approximately 190 pounds.

“Shy also has an outstanding burglary third degree warrant in connection with a third burglary on Dec. 21 at approximately 11 a.m .at a residence on Pike County Road 3304 south of Troy,” Scarbrough’s statement said.

Shy’s whereabouts were unknown as of Wednesday night. Scarbrough said police believe he has left the area.
