The Troy University student abducted and assaulted Tuesday morning is recovering in intensive care unit of a Montgomery hospital.

The student was stabbed multiple times during the incident, which appears to have started at her home in Troy and ended on County Road 7735 in the Needmore Community.

The incident began sometime after 9 p.m. at the victim’s residence on Smith Street. According to law enforcement, she reported being abducted from her home, beaten and stabbed, and taken in her car, which was stolen. The car apparently ran out of gas somewhere near County Road 7735. The victim walked from her vehicle to a residence on that county road, where the homeowner found her and called 911 about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim was taken to Troy Regional Medical Center and later transported to a Montgomery hospital.

Police say the suspect likely called for a ride from the area, and they are asking anyone who may have been asked to pick up or have knowledge of picking up a black male subject at approximately 2 a.m. Wednesday in the Needmore Road area close to County Roads 7731 or 7735 to call law enforcement officers. Also, if anyone saw a silver 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt in that same area, they should call Troy Police at 566-0500; the secret witness line at 566-5555; or the Pike County Sheriff’s Department at  566-4347.

Troy Police, Pike County Sheriff’s Department and Troy University are continuing to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, Troy University officials are urging all students, faculty and staff on the Troy Campus to exercise extreme caution following the incident.  A statement released by the university indicates officials were notified of the incident about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday and student services personnel met the victim’s family at the hospital in Montgomery. In addition, Dean of Student Services Herbert Reeves said the university’s counseling services are available to assist students who are friends of the victim.

The university statement also said federal laws prohibit the university from releasing the student’s name or other personal information.
