While it may have been a relatively short day for the Pike County Board of Education, several agenda items were approved Monday during the monthly meeting.

The board approved the Presentation of Financial Statement and Bank Reconcilement for the month of 2010, along with the approval of payment of payrolls for the month of November and account run dates of Nov. 19 and Dec. 8, 2010.

The board also approved the Memorandum of Agreement between Pike County School District and Auburn Montgomery Center for Government and Public Affairs.

The approval would allow Homeland Security to take pictures of the schools in the county, similar to the pictures Google Earth provides, according to Pike County Schools Superintendent Mark Bazzell.

The photos would be taken by airplanes for a more precise look and would be detailed enough to help schools navigate through any kind of situation. The comprehensive plan for 2010-2011 was also approved by the board, along with the request from Goshen High School and the Future Farmers of America to take the livestock exhibitors on overnight trips to AU Collegiate FFA Tiger Classic on Jan. 21-22 in Auburn, the Autauga Agribition on Feb. 4-5, in Autaugaville, West Central District Livestock Show on March 9-10 in Montgomery and the Alabama State Livestock Expo in Montgomery on March 10 through the 13 to show their livestock projects. There will be no expense to the BOE. The board approved the request from Daniel Walden to attend 2001 Alabama Music Educators Conference in Montgomery on Jan. 20-22, with the expenses to be paid by Title I funds.

Personnel wise, the board approved catastrophic, sick leave and FMLA for Voncile Sprayberry due to prolonged illness.

Edwina Thomas was approved as the kindergarten teacher at Pike County Elementary School and Joe Bob Allen was approved as a school bus driver.

“The right thing to do is to hire more administrative faculty (for the elementary school),” Bazzell said.

Thomas will begin on Jan. 3, 2011.

Stephanie Snyder also presented a video discussing the importance of school bus safety at the meeting.
