‘Tis the season for safety.

And that’s what Troy Police are encouraging residents, particularly college students, to keep in mind as the holidays approach.

With the dangers of burglaries, police are asking students to be smart and document all electronic devices, firearms and valuables in photographs or by recording serial numbers.

Additionally, they’re asking students to take what they can home over the holidays: laptops, gaming consoles, flat-screen televisions.

The police also offered these tips for securing residences and vehicles:

• Close and lock all windows, close all shades, drapes and blinds.

• Close and lock all enrance doors to your suite or apartment as well as your room.

• Take valuables (jewelry, money, laptops, etc.) home with you for safekeeping.

• Avoid leaving valuables in the common areas of apartments.

• Your voicemail should never indicate that you are not home.

• If you leave your car on capus, roll up the windows and lock the doors.

• Park in a well-lit location and remove all valuables from your car.

• If you leave your bicycle on campus, lock it to a bike rack w ith a U-shaped lock.

• Be sure to lock the frame, not the wheels, of the bike to the rack.

And, for residents throughout Troy, police urge caution and common sense: keep valuables out of sight while out shopping; keep doors and windows locked; report any suspicious activity or individuals to the police department at 566-0500.

It’s a sad statement but a true one that criminal activity increases this time of year. A little common sense will go a long way towards keeping your holidays merry and bright.
