The Humane Society of Pike County is sponsoring a fall spay and neuter program for dogs and cats.

The purpose of the spay and neuter program is to reduce the number of abused and abandoned animals in Pike County.

“This is the second spay and neuter program that the Humane Society of Pike County has offered in 2010,” said Susan Jinright, humane society treasurer.

“We were able to offer a fall program because of the great success of our 2011 Pet Photo Contest. Because of the large number of entries and votes cast in the contest and the support of our calendar by our sponsors and advertisers, we were able to pay for the printing of the Pet Photo Calendar and go immediately into the spay and neuter mode and put the money to work.”

The program offers dog and cat owner the opportunity to have their pets spayed and neutered at a savings of $40 each.

All four veterinarian clinics in Pike County are participating – Troy Animal Clinic, Trojan Animal Clinic and Pike Animal Hospital in Troy and Jones Animal Clinic in Brundidge.

“Pike County residents and Troy University students with an ID are eligible to participate in the spay and neuter program,” Jinright said. “Just call one of the veterinarian clinics and make an appointment and tell them that you want to participate in the Humane Society of Pike County’s spay and neuter program.

“Forty dollars will be deducted from the cost of the procedure.”

Participation in the spay and neuter program will be on a first come basis and will continue until the designated funds are depleted.

“In the spring, procedures were done on about 300 animals and hopes are to top that number in the fall,” Jinright said.

“If we can spay and neuter 600 dogs and cats each year, that will make a difference in the number of abandoned and abused animals and that will be beneficial to all Pike County.”
